Exploring Stone Town, Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. On its main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks. The archipelago is also known as The Spice Islands
The main island is about 85 km long and 39 km wide, with an area of 1,464 km2.
Stone town of Zanzibar is the old part of Zanzibar city which is the main city of Zanzibar in Tanzania. Its architecture mostly dating back to the 19 century century reflects diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture giving it a unique mixture of Arab Persian Indian and European elements and for this reason the town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the year 2000. Due to its heritage, stone town is also a major visitor attraction in Tanzania and a large part of the economy depends on tourism related activities.
The heart of Stone Town mostly consists of a maze of narrow alleys lined by houses, shops, bazaars and mosques. Since most streets are too narrow for cars, the town is crowded with bicycles and motorbikes. The seafront has wider streets and larger, more regularly placed buildings.
Stone Town's architecture has a number of distinctive features, as a result of Arab, Persian, Indian, European, and African traditions mixing together. The name "Stone Town" comes from the ubiquitous use of coral stone as the main construction material; this stone gives the town a characteristic, reddish warm colour.
Stone Town is punctuated with major historical buildings, several of which are found on the seafront; these include former palaces of the sultans, fortifications, churches, mosques, and other institutional buildings.
While Stone Town was included in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2000, this designation does not provide complete protection for the town's heritage. Despite the establishment of a Conservation Authority, about 80% of the 1,709 buildings of Stone Town are in a deteriorating condition. As coral stone is very friable, frequent maintenance is needed for most of these buildings. Some major restoration projects (especially on the seafront) have been done in recent times.

G'day Warbles. Before any place plays the tourism card, they seriously need to ask if they have anything of value to offer tourists. The biggest tourist trap in WA is the town of Broome. It costs big bucks to fly there and when there there is nothing to do. It only offers a beach, but WA has no shortage of white sandy beaches. All those Island resorts off the coast of Queensland all went broke. None of them really offered anything other than relaxation and relaxation is not a tourist attraction. G'day Ed, Yay Team ! Well done, William Tell - or is that Robin Hood ? On the point of "Importing Weapons" into Oz, Methinks thou hast Misunderconstumbled. Bows & Arrows are NOT "Prohibited Items" In any State or Territory of Oz... They require no Licence or Acquisition Permit - on the theory that by the time anyone develops the Skill required to hit anything, they will have developed the Self-restraint required such as to NOT go loosing Arrows Irresponsibly. Crossbows though, are a different Story. In 1968 someone hit and killed a random stranger, with a Crossbow, in Burwood Park in Sydney on a weekend afternoon, for Target Practice. And nobody knew where it came from, and the Hue & Cry was huge, so Crossbows were outlawed firstiez in NSW. Qld was the last to outlaw Crossbows, as part of Johnny Howard's Uniform National Weapons Regulation Push. So, I'm pretty sure that you could have brought ONE Bow & Arrow set, declared on Customs as a Souvenir, and Packed in your Suitcase booked into the 'Plane's Baggage Hold... One Knife, even a single souvenir matching Sword/Shield/Spear "Set" would be OK, treated that way. I surmise, based on what I know of the NSW & Oz Laws in Prohibited Weapons/Items. @@VBEd666 Absolutely ! A mate of mine went to Algeria, and hitch-hiked with a Camel Caravan across the Sahara, after which he kept going, through 36 Countries in a year with 34 of them being on the Continent of AfriKa. He had his "Everyday clothes" and his "Border-Crossing clothes", and he began in Morocco with a $US100 book of Travellers Cheques, which he burnt and reported asstolen, then had it re-issued in Francs, then the Francs got "stolen" and re-issued in Pounds Sterling, which were also "stolen" to become Marks, and then the Marks were "stolen" and they were re-issued as $US - which could be actually spent, as required. And then, when crossing Borders, Canada John could show the Guards his 3 books of unused English, French & German Cheques, plus the AmeriKan one's he was using. As long as one had more than $US200 they were considered to be rich enough to come in as Tourists. He still had $15 in US Money in the Book when he got to Zimbabwe and took a job shovelling Coal on a Steam-Locomotive - because he always had a Thing for Steamtrains. I think there were 50-something Countries between Kanadia and Oz, from 1970 to '75. He climbed Kilimanjaro and got 17,000 ft up the side of Everest - while walking from Tibet to Bhutan, And in between them - after West Pakistan, India, East Pakistan, Burma and Thailand...; in 1972, Canada John Hitch-hiked through Cambodia, Laos & South Vietnam...(!). Crossing Cambodia involved Helivoptering between two Loyalist Enclaves - going out over the Khmer-Rouge controlled Country, into which Sean Flynn (son of Erol Flynn, the Tasmanian Movie Star), ride on a Motor-Scooter and Vanished - at about the The same time Johnnie was Thumbing his way through, Going to Vietnam, "To have a look at their Wars..." After he died, crashing his Ultralight, I was collecting his "Effects" to send back to his father in Vancouver ; And I found, and handled, those 3 full and new - and one tattered battered almost used-up Books of Travellers' Cheques. Your AfriKan Safari, While rougher than Bali ; Looked a lot like "Glamping" (Glamorous Camping), To me, y' see. And, I bet it cost a shade more than the $85 US which Canada John spent on his epic crossing of the Continent. I made a video about him, titled, "REQUIEM FOR A REDHEAD..." It's in both my Warbles In The Wilderness, And Personal Aeroplanology Playlists... He was one of Kanadia's greatest Adventurers...; and he died in what amounted to being a Spintaneous Kamikaze Attack On a Sheep...(!). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
